Driving a rental car in Greece is not complicated, but be aware that some of the roads are narrow and winding and you should be careful not to go down dirt or unpaved roads.
 

◾ Getting on a ferry with the rental car

Between some of the islands there are ferry crossings. Take into account that some of the rental companies forbid boarding with the rented vehicle on a ferry, while other companies approve boarding on a ferry, but with an additional insurance fee. In any case, if there is an intention to board a ferry during the trip, this must be indicated by you at the booking stage.
 

◾ Toll roads

There are several toll roads in Greece, mainly in the Athens and Thessaloniki areas. The cost of traveling on them is relatively low and varies between 3 and 20 euros, depending on the section of the road. Also, a toll is charged in some of the tunnels and bridges. Most of the tolls are collected in cash. The use of electronic toll cards known from other European countries is more complex here, because the companies that build and manage the toll roads are private.
 

◾ Prohibition of leaving the country with the rented vehicle

For your attention - all the car rental suppliers in Greece forbid leaving the country your rented car.
 

◾ Restricted driving zone

Athens implements a restricted driving zone in its downtown area, called the "Daktylios".
It limits the entrance to the city center depending on the day by odd and even number ending plates and also if your car if low in co2 emission.

The limitation usually apply from October to July.
On weekends, official holidays or if there is a strike in public transportation - there is no limitation.
