Car rental in Berlin

More than 20 years after the Berlin Wall fell, the city nowadays is the trendiest metropolis in Europe. It integrates many different styles and attractions, which create fascinating combination between old and 21 century cultures. On the one hand, Berlin is a home for hundreds of historic sites, museums, art galleries, exhibitions, high tech and biomed companies, and on the other hand it's a buzzing nightlife capital with countless cafes and restaurants. Berlin is also an international center for students and underground art.

Berlin spans across a huge geographic area. A third of it is dedicated to forests, green parks, lakes and public gardens, giving the city its unique urban-nature mixture. Getting around Berlin is easy, both by public transportation and by rental car, since the road system in Berlin is top of the line. As a result, car rental is a favorable way to experience the different parts of the city and its atmosphere.

Driving a rental car in Berlin

Berlin, with its 3.5 million residents, is divided into six quarters: Mitte is the historical center and the beating heart at night. Western areas, including Charlottenburg Palace, Hippischoneberg and Tiergarten Park are more quiet and bourgeois. Eastern areas include Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, which are mixture of artists, students, media people and immigrants from around the world, and the trendy Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood.

Berlin has two international airports: Tegel which is located 8km northwest of the city, and Schonefeld which is 18km southeast from it. Both are well connected to the central train station and to the "Berliner Ring". Ofran operates in the airports via several major companies, such as Europcar, which also enable renting a car in other major locations across the city. The convenient locations and efficient costumers service offers Ofran's clients the ability to plan their trip in the German capital optimally.

Car categories vary between economy, compact, intermediate and luxury cars and also include minivans, minibuses and automatic vehicles. Road services are available 24 hours a day, whether you're in a big city or in rural areas.

Keep in mind that rented cars should be equipped with an "UMWELTPLAKETTE" green sticker. That sticker role is to avoid having polluting vehicles enter green zones. Those areas are marked with traffic sign called "Umweltzone". If you don't have a sticker - you will be fined. Car rental companies are required to provide you with the Umweltplakette, but it is advisable you verify it at the rental counter.

In contrast to other major cities in Europe, Berlin is relatively easy when it comes to parking. However, in the city's center and near major tourist attractions finding on-street parking might be frustrating. Alternatively, you can leave your car in a parking lot. Notice that in many areas in Berlin speed limit is restricted to 30kmph.

Germany is a strategic starting point for trips across Europe. However, there are several limitations when driving to Italy and Eastern Europe countries (Cezch Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Poland, etc.) with specific car categories (especially luxury cars, automatic vehicles and minivans). Make sure that these limitations don't interfere with your travel plans in advance and mind the restrictions that appear on your car rental agreement.

Please note that traveling to countries such as Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia requires a special road sticker - you'll be able to buy it at the relevant border crossing.
